Inside the Largest Green Production in Marvel History: How One Coordinator Rewrote the Rulebook

SO

Production Sustainability Coordinator · As told to Greenlight Intelligence

On a 280-day shoot spanning three continents, Samira Okonkwo managed waste streams, supplier certifications, and studio reporting — simultaneously. The numbers she brought home changed the conversation.

When the call came through, the production had already been running for eleven weeks. Three departments were buying single-use plastics in bulk, the catering contractor hadn't been vetted against the studio's new environmental supplier policy, and nobody had started the carbon accounting. A Marvel tentpole. One of the biggest productions in the studio's history. And the sustainability documentation was a blank page.

The first thing we did was stop treating it as a PR problem and start treating it as a supply chain audit. Every purchase order from week one was reconstructed. Every vendor contract was reviewed against the Albert certification criteria. We built a waste tracking spreadsheet that fed directly into the studio's reporting template — which meant the production accountant was generating compliance data without knowing it.

67%Reduction in production waste sent to landfill

"The studio didn't want a sustainability report. They wanted a legal defense. Those are very different documents, and most consultants don't know the difference."

The pull stat that got the most attention internally was the 67% landfill diversion figure. But the number that actually changed behavior on set was smaller: we calculated that 34% of all single-use plastic purchased in the first eleven weeks was used exactly once and then binned. That specificity — showing a department head the exact line item on their budget that was pure waste — that's what moved people.

By the final week of principal photography, we had enough documentation to submit for BAFTA Albert certification, satisfy the studio's internal ESG reporting requirements, and provide the insurance underwriter with a carbon liability summary. Three separate deliverables, one integrated data set. That's the work.

Forty Percent Less Energy, Zero Compromised Deadlines: A Post Supervisor's Blueprint

MD

Post-Production Supervisor · Broadcast Magazine Feature, Nov 2025

Marcus Delacroix oversaw the sustainability overhaul of a 14-suite post facility in Burbank. Twelve months later, the facility's energy bill is down by $380,000 annually — and not a single delivery was late.

Post facilities are the forgotten carbon source in the production sustainability conversation. Everyone talks about the physical shoot — generators, diesel trucks, single-use craft services. Nobody talks about the render farm running at 100% capacity, 24 hours a day, in a building with 1980s HVAC. That's where the real numbers are.

The audit Greenlight ran on our facility was the first time anyone had actually measured our consumption by suite, by workstation type, by time of day. The data was embarrassing — not because we were uniquely wasteful, but because we'd simply never looked. Three suites were running workstations overnight for renders that could have been scheduled during off-peak hours. The HVAC was cooling empty rooms on weekends.

40%Reduction in facility energy consumption, annualized

"Energy efficiency in post isn't a green initiative. It's a margin initiative. The moment I reframed it that way, the facility owner was on board before I finished the sentence."

The 40% reduction came from four changes: smart scheduling for render jobs, motion-sensor HVAC controls, a hardware refresh that replaced 2016-era workstations with current-gen chips drawing 35% less power, and renegotiating our energy contract to a renewable tariff. None of those changes required a single creative compromise. The colorist didn't notice. The editors didn't notice. The only people who noticed were the ones who write the checks.

The ROI calculation Greenlight provided — which we used to get sign-off from the facility owner — showed full payback on the hardware refresh in 26 months. The energy contract renegotiation had zero upfront cost. When you present sustainability as a financial instrument rather than a values statement, the conversation changes entirely.

Six Months, Four Countries, Zero Single-Use Plastics: A Locations Manager's Field Manual

PC

Locations Manager, 18-Year Veteran · Variety Crafts & Below-the-Line Spotlight, Jan 2026

Priya Chandrasekaran eliminated single-use plastics from a sprawling international shoot — without adding a line item to the locations budget. Her methodology is now standard practice at two major streamers.

The brief from the line producer was blunt: eliminate single-use plastics from all location operations without requesting additional budget and without creating any operational friction for other departments. That's a constraint that sounds impossible until you map exactly where single-use plastics are actually entering the location workflow. The answer, when we looked, was almost entirely in three places: water distribution, craft services packaging, and expendables.

Water was the easiest and the biggest. We replaced 1,200 single-use water bottles per shooting day with a station-based filtered water system at every base camp and location. The capital cost was covered in three weeks by the savings on bottled water purchase orders. The crew didn't complain — in fact, the feedback was positive, because the water quality was better.

0Single-use plastic items purchased in final 18 weeks of shoot

"The locations department gets blamed for everything that's inconvenient on a shoot. I decided that sustainability was going to be the one thing we got credit for."

Craft services required more negotiation. We issued a revised supplier brief that specified reusable or compostable packaging for all on-location catering, with a price cap that matched the existing contract. Three of our four regular suppliers adapted immediately. The fourth was replaced. The replacement supplier was cheaper. The expendables category was the most granular — we built a substitution matrix for every single-use item in the standard locations kit, from cable ties to paint pots, with a reusable or recyclable alternative and a cost comparison.

By week fourteen of eighteen, we had achieved zero single-use plastic purchasing across all location operations. The data was submitted to the studio's sustainability team, verified by Greenlight, and used as the primary evidence in the production's Albert certification application. It has since been adopted as the standard locations sustainability protocol by two streaming platforms we work with regularly. The methodology is not complicated. It requires someone who is willing to look at every line item and make a decision. That's the work.
